Bold and Reliable: Raspberry Pi Ventures into USB Flash Drives
Raspberry Pi, widely recognized for its affordable and customizable computers, is now urging its community to explore the option of purchasing USB flash drives.
Recently, the company took a significant step by introducing Raspberry Pi-branded USB 3.0 flash drives, with prices starting at $30. While this price point may be higher than the typical USB stick available in stores, it guarantees enhanced performance and sturdiness.
In a blog post, Raspberry Pi notes, "When it comes to basic tech like this, it’s easy to opt for the cheapest option on Amazon or whatever you can find at your local grocery store. However, this could lead you to a product with slow read and write speeds, a fragile outer shell, or—most concerning of all—much less storage capacity than advertised."
The new product, simply named the Raspberry Pi Flash Drive, is available for $30 for the 128GB variant and $55 for the 256GB version. This pricing is roughly double that of cheaper alternatives found on Amazon. Nevertheless, Raspberry Pi asserts that their flash drive features a stylish "all-aluminum enclosure," designed to withstand everyday wear and tear.
The 128GB model boasts a data transfer speed of up to 75MB per second, whereas the 256GB version can reach impressive speeds of 150 MB/s. Interestingly, these drives are capable of achieving even faster speeds in short bursts, attributed to a "small reservation of pseudo-SLC cache to enhance performance," according to the company.
However, it’s worth noting that this cache can complicate benchmarking. As such, Raspberry Pi clarifies, "The USB 3.0 performance figures we provide are based on sustained performance metrics."
Another notable advantage of these drives is their support for S.M.A.R.T. health reporting, which allows users to keep track of the lifespan of the device. Each USB drive is engineered for use with a USB Type A connector and includes a convenient hole for attaching to a keyring or chain.
Furthermore, Raspberry Pi emphasizes the reliability of their product, stating, "Our comprehensive testing ensures that it can endure real-life scenarios involving sudden disconnections and power failures. We confirmed that our new flash drive met this standard through tens of thousands of random power cycles while managing intermittently intensive I/O workloads."
