Washington's architectural marvel: George Clarke's bookshop and cafe dream comes to life
The renowned TV architect, George Clarke, has received the green light for his ambitious project in Washington. The plans, which have been approved by Sunderland City Council, will transform a Grade II listed property on High Street West into a captivating bookshop, cafe, and event space. This venture is a testament to Clarke's passion for books, restoration architecture, and his deep connection to Sunderland.
The development, named 'Home of Books', will not only serve as a haven for book lovers but also provide a unique experience for visitors. The building's upper floors will be converted into an apartment, offering a blend of personal space for Clarke and his family and boutique accommodation for short stays. This dual purpose will create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, attracting locals and tourists alike.
The plans include a range of meticulous restoration and design elements. The original shopfront will be beautifully preserved, with alterations to openings and the reinstatement of Georgian-style joinery. The rear extension will be remodelled, and new windows and internal staircases will enhance the overall aesthetic. These details will contribute to the creation of a high-quality physical environment, as noted by Sunderland City Council.
In addition to the bookshop and cafe, the development will feature a small wine bar, providing a cozy setting for patrons to enjoy a glass of wine while perusing the shelves. A new refuse and cycle store will also be included, promoting sustainability and convenience.
The upper floors will be transformed into a single apartment with four bedrooms, designed as a tranquil and well-appointed space. Clarke envisions it as a sanctuary for himself and his family when in Sunderland, as well as a hub for visiting writers, artists, and other contributors to the city's creative scene. This apartment will become a focal point for cultural exchange and artistic collaboration.
Clarke expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'Sunderland is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and I believe 'Home of Books' can play a significant role in this evolution. Rooted in the city's rich history, the bookshop will embrace new stories, ideas, and the individuals who bring them to life.'
The project is set to open its doors in 2026, subject to planning permission. With its unique blend of architecture, culture, and community, 'Home of Books' promises to become a beloved destination for residents and visitors alike, enriching the vibrant neighbourhood of Sunniside.
