The rugby world is buzzing! Speculation has been swirling about Tony Brown's future, and Rassie Erasmus, in his signature style, has finally broken the silence. The question on everyone's mind: Is Brown staying with the Springboks, or will he return to his homeland to coach the All Blacks? Let's dive in!
Rumors began to fly after Scott Robertson's unexpected departure from the New Zealand Rugby scene. This immediately sparked whispers that Brown, a highly respected figure in the rugby world, might be tempted to return home. But, as we'll see, it's not that simple.
Brown, the Springboks' attack guru, has a history with the New Zealand Rugby. They've attempted to lure him in twice before, hoping he would join the coaching staffs of Ian Foster and Robertson. However, Brown has shown unwavering loyalty, previously choosing to remain with Jamie Joseph as his assistant coach in Japan until the end of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. He then joined Erasmus in South Africa.
Now, with Robertson's dismissal, the idea of Brown coaching the All Blacks has resurfaced. Some believe this could be the third time New Zealand Rugby tries to get him. The frontrunner to take over the All Blacks head coaching role is Joseph.
Erasmus, however, put the rumors to rest, taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday evening. He did so in a way that fans have come to love, using a meme from the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. The image featured Brown's face edited onto Leonardo DiCaprio, with the text reading, 'I'm not leaving.' Erasmus further emphasized his point with an AI-generated post of the movie scene.
But here's where it gets interesting: Brown is currently contracted with SA Rugby through the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Reports suggest Erasmus is keen to extend Brown's deal even further, potentially through 2031. This is a testament to the value Brown brings to the team. When Erasmus's extension was announced, SA Rugby stated that an announcement regarding the coaching team's contract negotiations would follow. Erasmus's social media posts strongly suggest Brown may have already signed on the dotted line.
While Brown may be staying put for now, he hasn't hidden his desire to work with New Zealand in the future. In 2024, he stated, "One day, maybe I might coach the All Blacks – I don’t know. I just want to be part of this coaching set-up and the Springboks over the next four years."
So, what do you think? Is it a good move for Brown to stay with the Springboks, or would you like to see him coaching the All Blacks? Share your thoughts in the comments below! And, do you think Erasmus is building something special with his coaching team? Let's discuss!
